Basal and Stimulated Plasma Gastrin Level in Patients with Peptic Ulcer

Abstract
Plasma gastrin responses to Sanatogen load as well as fasting venous levels were meas¡þured in 7 patients with peptic ulcer disease. The patients included 3 with gastric ulcer and 4 with duodenal ulcer disease.
After an overnight fast, the examination was carried out in the early morning. Blood samples were drawn for an hour after Sanatogen loads and plasma gastrin concentrations were measured by means of radioimmunoassay.
Following were the results;
1. Fasting plasma gastrin concentrations in patients with gastric ulcer were somewhat higher than those of the patients with duodenal ulcer, although the difference were not so wide.
2. Peak gastrin responses to Sanatogen shown no detectable differences between gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer.
3. When the prefeeding gastrin concentration was subtracted from peak gastrin response to Sanatogen, then the response for the duodenal ulcer patients as modestly higher than that of the gastric ulcer patient.
4. There was little relation between fasting plasma gastrin concentration and peak gastrin concentration following Sanatogen.
5. There was no direct relation between fasting gastrin concentration and the magnitude of the response to feeding.
6. With above results, author discussed the possible role of gastrin in hypersecretion associated with duodenal ulcer.
